石英玻璃是二氧化硅單一成分的非晶態(tài)材料，其微觀結(jié)構(gòu)是一種由二氧化硅四面結(jié)構(gòu)體結(jié)構(gòu)單元組成的單純網(wǎng)絡(luò)，由于Si-O化學(xué)鍵能很大，結(jié)構(gòu)很緊密，所以石英玻璃具有獨特的性能，尤其透明石英玻璃的光學(xué)性能非常優(yōu)異，在紫外到紅外輻射的連續(xù)波長范圍都有優(yōu)良的透射比。石英玻璃采用高純度的硅砂作為原料，制作的傳統(tǒng)方法是熔融-淬滅方法（加熱材料到熔化溫度，然后快速冷卻到玻璃的固態(tài)相）；制作超高純度和紫外透射比的透明玻璃需硅的汽化、氧化成二氧化硅并加熱溶解等過程。石英玻璃的形成是由于其熔體高溫黏度很高引起的結(jié)果。用于制作半導(dǎo)體、電光源器、半導(dǎo)通信裝置、激光器，光學(xué)儀器，實驗室儀器、電學(xué)設(shè)備、醫(yī)療設(shè)備和耐高溫耐腐蝕的化學(xué)儀器、化工、電子、冶金、建材以及國防等工業(yè)，應(yīng)用十分廣泛。高純石英玻璃可制光導(dǎo)纖維。隨著半導(dǎo)體技術(shù)的發(fā)展，石英玻璃被廣泛的用于半導(dǎo)體生產(chǎn)的各項工序中。比如，直拉法把多晶轉(zhuǎn)化成單晶硅；清洗時用的清洗槽；擴散時用的擴散管、刻槽舟；離子注入時用的鐘罩等等。
